The New Victoria Police Super Complex

Posted on October 9th, 2013

VSL Infrastructure Protection has recently secured a contract to provide blast engineering analysis and design services for the glass curtain wall façade for the under construction City West Police Complex in Melbourne, Victoria. VSL IP is working closely with the nominated façade contractor to engineer the optimal design solution for the main contractor.

The blast engineering requirements for this project are extremely complex; a fully glazed unitised curtain wall façade typical of commercial buildings is required to withstand relatively large blast loads. The architecturally complex structure has over twenty different details all of which require complex blast effects analysis to ensure they meet the performance specifications to limit deformation and prevent airblast from entering the building. VSL engineers are working in close coordination with the G.James commercial façade team to ensure the best outcome is achieved within a tight construction schedule and realistic budget.

The new Victoria Police super complex will house 1600 officers and will be built in Melbourne. Acting Chief Commissioner Tim Cartwright says the new facility will provide a vastly improved headquarters for three of the force's busiest departments. "It really will be a jewel in the crown for Victoria Police and our mission to provide the best possible policing services to the community," he said. "The new facility will be highly visible, providing reassurance and enhanced security for Victorians going about their daily business.”
